For years, Los Angeles families have faced a very complicated and disconnected set of applications to find and enroll in great public schools. Each school can have its own requirements, platform, and deadlines, so filling out all the paperwork and keeping track of it can be confusing and even overwhelming for families.
When GPSN held a series of public events last year to hear from parents about how public education can be improved, many attendees said the current enrollment process wasn’t working and that communities needed a more family-friendly charter application process.
That's why Great Public Schools Now launched a single, common sense application system – ApplyLA – so families can apply to multiple independent charter schools. Families fill out one application, on one website, and apply to as many schools as they want in as little as five minutes. About 10% of LA’s charter schools volunteered to be part of the first year’s pilot program. The site currently has 31 schools, and more are expected to join after this year.
