Great Public Schools Now Releases Benchmark Data Aimed at Guiding Decisions of Where to Allocate Philanthropic Resources
Guidelines reiterate commitment to investing in all types of public schools, including charter, magnet, Pilot, or Partnership schools.
As Great Public Schools Now formulates its plans to help expand high-performing public schools that serve students in high-poverty areas, the organization today released a list of schools – and corresponding data from those schools -- that details the kinds of schools the group will seek to replicate through its philanthropic giving.
One example is the criteria for determining whether a public school is high-quality, or has the potential to be high-quality, which will be based on multiple measures such as state assessments, graduation rates, and other metrics.
As part of its data analysis, Great Public Schools Now released a list of 28 high-quality public schools that are offering a high-quality education to students in need. The list includes sixteen charter schools, eight magnets, and four traditional neighborhood schools, all of which have more than 75% of students qualifying for Free and Reduced Price Meals (FRPM) and had more than 60% of students meet or exceed the English Language Arts standards in 2015.
Garfield Computer Science Magnet, a high school magnet in East Los Angeles, is one such school, with 94% of students qualifying for FRPM and 77% of those students meeting or exceeding the English Language Arts standard. Synergy Quantum Academy, a charter school in South Los Angeles, has 96% of its students qualifying for the meals program, and 67% met or exceeded the English standard. The full list is provided under separate cover.
“These schools deliver the kind of high-quality education that Great Public Schools Now will seek to help replicate,” said Bill Siart, Great Public Schools Now Chairman. “It’s critical that we identify what is working in our education system, and seek to expand those successes. Through our effort, we will be targeting our resources to grow these kinds of proven models in specific areas of need.”
This grouping of schools offers a few key takeaways:
- Each of these schools proves that all students can learn, regardless of socioeconomic background. While there are challenges in educating students of need, those challenges are not insurmountable. Great Public Schools Now is focusing on investing in schools that have demonstrated an ability to meet the challenges and provide all students with a high-quality education.
- The list demonstrates that multiple schools models have found success in educating students in need. The list includes charter schools, magnet schools, and traditional schools, all of which have demonstrated success in educating their students. Because of this, Great Public Schools Now is considering how to invest in multiple types of public schools to expand the number of high-quality options for students throughout Greater Los Angeles.
